29th November 2012
Puhinui 3 Day entries have now closed, and looking at the entry list, its shaping up to be a tough competition!
Christen Hayde will be back on Tandarra Sweet As to defend her title in the CCI***. She will be up against some excellent competition including the recent National ODE winner, Donna Smith on Just Chocolate. South Islander, Annabel Wigley will also be hoping for a good result with her two entries in the CCI***.
Donna Smith is now the leader in the Bell Tea Super League, hotly pursued by Ashleigh McKinstry, Bryce Newman and Simon Gordon. Ashleigh is also leading the Massey University Young Rider series. Puhinui is an extremely important event in the Super League and the Series, as double points are up for grabs. All these riders are entered.
While we won’t have any of our Olympic bronze medal team members at the event, we will some of our English based kiwi eventers, all pushing hard for consideration for the team for the World Equestrian Games, which will be held in France in 2014.
Clarke Johnstone, one of the kiwi bronze medal winners at WEG in 2010, has entered in the CCI*. Lizzie Brown will be competing in the Novice and PreNovice. Both Clarke and Lizzie will be returning to the UK in time to prepare their UK team for the eventing season there (presuming it stops raining there!)
Rumour has it that a visit to Puhinui is on the cards for young British up-and-coming eventer, Nick Gauntlett, and his bride Amanda, who will be in New Zealand on their honeymoon. Nick plans on establishing whether there are any other kiwis that ride like Andrew Nicholson!
As well as the eventing action, there are also the ever-popular Hunter Derby classes held on Sunday, the final day. These classes consist of a set number of cross country and show jumps and will include the famous Puhinui bank. Judging follows the show jumping model, as faults will be awarded for faults such as stopping or dropping a rail. There will be an instant jump off for clear rounds. The team challenge is always popular and with entries for this being done on the day, there is always an opportunity for putting together an on-form team!
Shopping will also feature at the show, with all your equestrian needs able to be met. The trade area overlooks the main arena, and is always a lively and vibrant area, with some good event specials on offer. There’s also a good range of food vendors booked in, offering coffee, freshly squeezed juices to something stronger, icecreams to burgers.
Puhinui is shaping up to be a great event, and we look forward to seeing you there!
One of Eventing New Zealand’s showcase competitions, Puhinui International Three Day Event is on from Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 December 2012 on the Puhinui Reserve, Prices Road, Manukau City. Dressage is Friday, Cross country day is Saturday and showjumping Sunday.
