Comments about the December 2009 3 Day Horse Trials

24th December 2009
May I say a big thank you to all the organisers and volunteers for this weekend's competition. I can only begin to imagine the amount of work that is required to put on such a successful event and you did a brilliant job, even down to fixing the weather! ... Thanks again for a superb event. You did a fantastic job.
- Russell Hall, Clifton Eventers

Many thanks for helping organise such a fabulous comp at Puhinui! We had a great time and I wanted to say how much fun it was. Loved the cross country ... what a beautiful flowing course - and from a rider's point of view everything seemed very well organised, thanks to all the dedicated people who worked so hard to make it all run smoothly. As an amateur rider it is great to have the chance to compete in an event like this, and I love the changes that have been made to the Puhinui event format, which have made it more accessible to riders like myself.
- Virginia Were

Thanks for a lovely day out, we really enjoyed your hospitality. I must say that you had the most helpful friendly stewards etc that I have seen at any event! They were delightful to deal with.
- Nicola Bradstreet, Region Manager Waikato/BOP, Meat & Wool New Zealand Limited

It is not so many years ago that Puhinui only wnated to run two and three star horses plus aninvitational -- it is good to see organisers listening to competitors and acting accordingly.
Credit must also go to the publicity department of this event who were able to put eventing back on the six o'clock News, great work! It must be said, however, that to have only four New Zealand horses iin the three star has to be a concern.
Related to the aforementioned subject is the conituned problem of gaining three star qualifications. It is crucial to have several opportunities toachieve this in a season and not all CIC***s need to be of championship standard.
- Todd Gloyn, Riders Rep Comment

I would like to thank the three-day-event organisers for getting us involved with the Planet Clean pony club teams derby. It was a really fun event and it was good to see such strong support with 20 or so teams contesting the event. It seemed to run fairly smoothly and all credit to the team for getting younger riders involved. I know Cambridge is keen to come back again next year!

It certainly is a great venue and a really worthwhile event. The course, although small in size, caught out its fair share of riders and encouraged bold riding. Please don't make too many changes to that format as then it becomes just a mad gallop around. The different fences had mounts really taking a good look so they generally jumped carefully.
-Kirsten Richards, Cambridge Pony Club.

Big congrats to all who contributed to staging such a fantastic event!
- Monica

Once again Kaye I want to thank you & your team for the outstanding job you do running the Puhanui 3 Day.
As you know we do a huge amount of shows & yours is without doubt the most pleasurable to be involved with. Everything is always hassle free, your innovation at “reinventing” the show each year to keep it fresh & growing always amazes me, the wine & cheese for the “trot up” is a prime example!
You can rest assured Kaye, you have Savvy Touch as a sponsor again for 2010!
- Steve Cleary, Director, Savvy Touch

The entire event ran so smoothly –you all did a fantastic job.
- Murray Steele

The kids had a great time last week-end riding. Well done. I don't know how you manage to organise such a huge event.
- Denise McGiven

We're looking forward to next season. Well done on running a fantastic event. Very exciting for the future.
- John Twomey

A great Event. Thank you very much. We did appreciate the opportunity to be part of it all. We were impressed with your handling of your work load, and the spectacle you presented for the competitors and for the public's enjoyment. We're sure that The Event will continue to grow over the coming years.
- Jim & Beth Wright

Thank you for all your help this weekend! You made things so easy for us and it makes all the difference when working to deadlines. Hope you had a great weekend.
- Penny Ydgren, Reporter, 3 NEWS

..... and big congrats to all who contributed to staging such a fantastic event

Schools’ Challenge Event Gallops Forward

7th December 2009
Fifteen schools, and over 250 children, have put their names forward for the second Sealord Manukau City Schools’ Challenge.

Run in conjunction with the revamped Manukau City Puhinui 3 Day Horse Trials, the aim of the competition is to have competitors replicate ‘human’ versions of equestrian sport—such as dressage, cross country and show jumping.

According to Manukau City Deputy Mayor Gary Troup, staging such an event further achieves the aim of making the Puhinui facility accessible to the people of Manukau and Auckland.

“Along with Eventing Auckland we believe a window of opportunity exists to build on an existing high profile event—the Manukau City Puhinui 3 Day Horse Trial—with the aim of creating a ‘flagship’ sporting and community show that brings out the best, and most unique, flavours of the Manukau Region.

“The Sealord sponsored schools’ event is clearly part of this new look for Puhinui.”

Manukau on the Move and Counties Manukau Sport will be involved in helping to ensure the event runs smoothly and that all participants have a great experience.

Educational and spot prizes are given out to all competitors with the winning teams scoring significant ‘riches’ for their respective schools.

The event is being held at Puhinui on Friday December 11th. For more information contact EVENT DIRECTOR Kaye Coyne on 027 224 1979.

Day 3 - Show Jumping & Final Day Results

24th November 2008
New Zealand Horse & Pony CIC**

The weather forecast was despicable but the eventing spirits managed to keep the anticipated rain away long enough to ensure the show jumping course was dry and rideable.

Overnight leader, Cambridge’s John Twomey (riding Highly Recommended) consolidated his lead from the cross country with a clear show jumping round. New Plymouth’s Matthew Grayling, riding NRM Cruzintime finished 2nd.

Comeback rider and former World Champion, Vaughn Jefferis, building on his excellent cross country performance did a clear cross country round and finished in 8th place rising from 19th after the dressage phase. Those in the know say his cross country and show jumping form were reminiscent of his past performances.

1. John Twomey, Highly Recommended—Cambridge
2. Matthew Grayling, NRM Cruzintime—New Plymouth
3. John Twomey, Flaunt It—Cambridge
4. Juliet Wood, Just Joop—Whangarei

Manukau City CIC***

The class started Friday with 18 competitors but by Day 3 and the show jumping phase only 8 riders remained. Overnight leader Clarke Johnstone, riding Orient Express, finished 1st despite 8 time faults. Overnight 2nd place holder Donna Smith had 8 faults in the show jumping allowing Jonathan Paget to claim 2nd place. Donna finished 3rd.

Bad luck plagued overnight 3rd place holder James Jackson, riding for first place in the CIC*, had a fall at the last show jump and dislocated his shoulder so was unable to compete in the CIC***. Fourth place holder Natalie Page failed to present and did not compete in the show jumping.

1. Clarke Johnstone, Orient Express—Hamilton
2. Jonathan Paget, Clifton Promise—Auckland
3. Donna Smith, Stanage—Te Awamutu
4. Clarke Johnstone, Oakley Vision—Hamilton
5. Jonathan Paget, Clifton Jade—Auckland

Day 2 - Cross Country

23rd November 2008
New Zealand Horse & Pony CIC**

A combination of bright sunshine, blustery Nor’ easterly winds and even a fashion show on truck back provided some interesting conditions for riders competing in the 2008 New Zealand Horse & Pony CIC**. Overnight leader, Cambridge’s John Twomey (riding Highly Recommended) consolidated his lead with a clear cross country. New Plymouth’s Matthew Grayling, riding NRM Cruzintime, leapt from 5th place to 2nd. Comeback rider and former World Champion, Vaughn Jefferis, found the cross country phase to his liking lifting his place from yesterday’s 19th to 12th.

1. John Twomey, Highly Recommended, 43.9—Cambridge
2. Matthew Grayling, NRM Cruzintime, 51.2—New Plymouth
3. John Twomey, Flaunt It, 53.4—Cambridge

5. Kylee McCambridge, Joaquin, 64.8—Waikato

Manukau City CIC***

With little separating the leaders after yesterday’s dressage phase, and with the Puhunui course riding well, those going clear in the cross country would have the jump on the competition going into the final day. Overnight leader Clarke Johnstone, riding Orient Express, consolidated his lead while Donna Smith maintained her second placing. Place holders from the dressage phase Anne-Marie Styles, Shelly Ross and Mitty Forsyth either retired their horses or eliminate.

1. Clarke Johnstone, Orient Express, 58.3—Hamilton

Equestrian Legend to Kick off International Campaign at Puhinui

12th November 2008
Former 3 Day Eventing World Champion and Olympic medallist Vaughn Jefferis is to launch his bid for the prospect 2012 London Games "glory" at the upcoming Manukau City Puhinui 3 Day Event.

Following in the hoof prints of fellow Olympian Mark Todd who used the event earlier this year to qualify for the Beijing Olympics, Vaughn Jefferis sees Puhinui as being the ideal jumping off point for a serious bid for further international achievement.

His first goal is the 2010 World Equestrian Championships being held in one of the equine centre’s of the world, Kentucky, United States of America. All being well there the next major goal is the 2012 Olympic Games.

"Puhinui has an international reputation and is one of the icon eventing courses in this part of the world. It is also a demanding venue and will provide me with a good gauge of where I am competition and fitness wise."

"I saw the reception and triumph Mark enjoyed at Puhinui and the delight so many had in seeing such a great New Zealand rider back in competition. I’m a firm believer that success does follow in the steps of other’s success, so I’m honoured and excited to launch my comeback at the Manukau City sponsored event."

Having not seriously ridden since the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the right competitive elements needed to be in place to entice him out of retirement. With his champion mount Bounce truly in retirement the first part of the "come back" equation was horse power. Cuzzy Bro (owned previously by New Zealand Olympic team member Heelan Tompkins) caught his eye.

"I liked what I saw in this horse - he is a seven-year-old dark brown thoroughbred and I believe he is one of the best young horses in New Zealand. He’s already qualified 3***, he’s beautifully made and has the potential to become a world class athlete."

Ironically, the horse was qualified to compete at Puhinui but not the rider. That hurdle was overcome early November allowing Vaughn Jefferis to put his dreams more firmly on track.

Rounding out the team is the return of highly accomplished groom Jo Osborne who was an integral part of the Jefferis/Bounce winning combination.
"Jo was very instrumental in my career when I was competing and took care of Bounce for me over 12 years."

"She's a remarkable horse person and she’s agreed to come back and groom for me and travel around the country, and the world, so we can all be part of the New Zealand Olympic team come London in 2012"

The Manukau City Puhinui 3 Day event starts on Friday November 21st with the Dressage Phase; Saturday November 22nd sees the Cross Country stage and the event culminates with the Show Jumping competition on Sunday November 23rd.

The Manukau City Puhinui 3 Day Horse Trial is a major event in the equestrian calendar and is run by Eventing Auckland which was formed in 1983. Horses and riders compete in 3 disciplines over 3 days"dressage, cross country and show jumping. There are three classes of competition"ranging from the highest level grade CCI***, to the CCI** and the CCI*. Everton Lodge Farm Sport Horses supports The Breeders Class

3rd November 2008
Sponsors of the Puhinui Breeders' Young Event Horse class, Julie and Darryl Butson are now breeding some of Europe's top lines of sport horses at Everton Lodge Farm. Importing semen from Kedrah House Stud in Ireland, these New Zealand breeders now have acess to Olympic and world Champion bloodlines of Lux Z and Ricardo Z.

"We have an open door policy for viewing," says Julie. "We encourage breeders to come and look at our young stock and see for themselves - go on, give us a ring and come a see a Lux Z or a Ricardo Z!"

"We pride ourselves on presenting young stock in the show ring that are well performed and conditioned and that get results. We position ourselves as the new generation of sport horse breeders setting the example."

"We use the best riders available who have considerable national and international experience to break in and educate our horses. It certainly helps later on in life."

It's a group effort," Julie says, "our local support team plays a big part in our success with our farrier, vets, and physios amongst the best in New Zealand. Because of our location, we are lucky to have access to these very skilled people and all of these people have helped our young stock during their growing phases.

The horses

LUX Z
Bay , 16.2hh, 1988
By Lord Calando Apocalypte Z

LUX Z has an amazing natural ability to jump, which is reflected in his remarkable approval by the KWPN, Holstein, Hannoverian, and Zangersheide studbooks. His consistency as a world class showjumper to date has reflected in his young stock with seven off spring now standing as stallions in Europe and other young stock topping sale prices globally.

Lux Z is one of the most successful stallions in international show jumping. With Jerry Smit, Lux Z participated in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and he won the Pulsar Crown competitions in Valkenswaard and Cannes. This brought Lux Z's total winnings to more than a million euro (Approx NZD $2million).

The Hanoverian stallion Lux Z was bred at Zangersheide Stud Farm out of the Holstein mare Apocalypte Z (Ahorn Z), a product of lineage 2543. This famous Holstein family was also responsible for the licensed stallions Lavallo, Lasino and Lone Star.

Lux Z not only produced foal class champions, mare class champions and FPP show jumping competition winners but also very promising sport horses. Products from his first season in Holstein are, amongst others, the international show jumpers Gazelle d 'Aubry (Thomas Voss), Lux Can Do It (Tobias Bachl) and Lagunas (Ben Schröder). From his first breeding season in the Netherlands, Lux Z supplied no less than five licensed sons, namely Lupicor-H (KWPN), Nobility (KWPN), Nagano (BWP), Niveau (KWPN) and Non Stop R (SZ).

In addition to jumping ability, Lux Z also anchors his type and movements in his offspring.

Ricardo Z (Zangersheide)
Brown, 168cm, 1994
By Rebel II Z (HANN) Kuriosa, by Furioso II (Selle Francais). Winner four- yr-old Royal Dublin Show 1998. Dam is a full brother of Ratina Z (winner of 2 Olympics and 2 Gold Cups)

RICARDO Z has considerable international success with stock performing in in hand showing, show jumping, hunter classes and eventing so breeders should be confident that his progeny will be of international appeal.

By Rebel II Z (HANNOVERIAN) and out of KURIOSA, RICARDO Z has a long line of Hannoverian and TB crosses throughout his pedigree and given our breed lines in NZ being of similar type, RICARDO Z will prove to be an excellent cross. The type of horse that RICARDO Z will produce will be one that will show excellent bone - not to heavy and not too light.

Given RICARDO Z has thrown multiple champions offspring, we are confident that he will produce great all round horses with New Zealand mares that will compete at the highest level both in NZ and overseas.

The Farm

Situated in Patuamahoe South Auckland (just 10 minutes from NZ Bloodstock Papakua), the area is home to most equine disciplines including show jumping, dressage, eventing, studs, horse racing and polo. This area of South Auckland has excellent facilities with easy access to many tracks and trails including the Waiuku Forest and Karoitahi Beach -- ideal preparation before that first local show or a trip to Isola or Abderry just up the road.

Breeders Promotion
Everton Lodge Farm Sport Horses have an offer for all breeders this season:
Prize one - The first horse by Lux Z that wins a registered young horse championship class (4 or 5 years old) at Horse of the Year (or equivalent) wins up to $5000.00 OR
Prize two - the first horse by Ricardo Z to win a one star event wins a CWD flat seat show jumping saddle valued at $4000.00

"Its simple" says Julie Butson of Everton Lodge Farm Sport Horses, "we simply want happy breeders and we are completely dedicated to the success of the young horses that hold the future in show jumping and eventing in New Zealand."

Puhunui 3 Day Event
Everton Lodge Farm are very pleased to be involved in the promotion of The Breeders Class at the Puhunui Horse Trial for the second year running. We see this event as a fantastic competitive and social occasion and hope to catch up with you and have a chat about Ricardo Z as his offspring are doing exceptionally well in the eventing circles of Europe. Including a recent a Ricardo Z mare (APAPA) starting at the Bramham International Horse Trial where Caroline Powell who represented New Zealand landed a creditable 5th placing in the teams event.

New Sponsors & Ideas Help Grow Puhinui Event

29th October 2008
Support from two newcomers to the Manukau City Puhinui Horse Trials sponsorship family have resulted in the creation of one new class and the expansion of another.

Clinic 42 - a skin enhancement and rejuvenation medical practice - are behind the creation of the Open Hunter Derby Classic. Organisers have added this class to bridge the gap between eventers, show hunters, hunters and show jumpers as well as a way to demonstrate a sporting horse's ability to perform accurately and willingly for riders.

Run over a 1 km course, the class will comprise 15 fences - half cross country and half rustic show jumping - that will be no more than 1 meter in height.

It is Clinic 42's first foray into equestrian sport but they hope to build up a presence, and following, among the equine minded.

Equine Trader - an on-line equestrian resource and trading site - have taken on the sponsorship of The Breeders' Puhinui Young Event Horse class with the support of Everton Lodge and Equibreed. As the name implies, this is very much an equine talent hunt with the aim of identifying equine acumen at the earliest age and stage. Close to a dozen breeders are backing the class this already.

Equine Trader are combining their sponsorship of this class with the launch of their on line sport horse stud book and stallion listing web site. Puhinui sponsors will be offered a discounted rate to help promote their various products and services.

Everton Lodge is once again offering a free service to Ricardo Z - one of Ireland's pre-eminent jumping stallions - as first prize for this class and also is sponsoring the Everton Lodge Best Presented Young Horse. Everton Lodge is the New Zealand agent for Ricardo Z and stable mate Lux Z. This prize for the Young Event Horse class has a value of over $2500.

Another first for Puhinui is the Bell Tea Schools' Team Open Derby Classic Competition. Bell Tea has been one of the sport's most avid supporters and sees its backing of the Schools' competition as a way to encourage young riders. The competition is open to schools with teams of four riders.

Other classes include the Manukau City CIC*** & Forest Gate Advanced Championship; New Zealand Horse and Pony CIC** & Waiteko Intermediate Championship; Metalcraft Roofing CIC * & Ferndale Novice Championship; Chevalier Horselands Kumeu Grains Pre Novice Championship and the Winger Hyundai Pre Novice.

While outside the normal domain of the four legged, Puhinui is the staging of a non equestrian fun day for local schools. The Sealord Puhinui Top Schools' Challenge 2008 has 250 children having FUN at Puhinui on Friday 21st November. They will be competing in human versions of the various Eventing and other equestrian sport disciplines.

The Trials run from Friday 21st November to Sunday 23rd November at the Prices Road Puhinui Reserve.

Trade Stands available.
